Celebrated each year on October 9th, International Beer and Pizza Day pays homage to one of the most iconic food and drink pairings on Earth. Both beer and pizza exist in countless varieties and are enjoyed across nearly every culture. From small town breweries to global beer giants, from cozy mom and pop pizzerias to worldwide pizza chains, International Beer and Pizza Day is a celebration everyone can raise a glass and a slice to!

The Story of Beer and Pizza Day

Nick Saulino noticed there was a day for nearly everything except the greatest food and drink pairing of all. So he made one, picked October 9, and put it on the internet.

No sponsor, no committee. The day spread the way good ideas do: holiday calendars listed it, bars and pizzerias started running October 9 specials, and people everywhere began posting their slice and pint with #BeerAndPizzaDay.

Beer

People have been brewing beer for at least 7,000 years, from ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt to the taproom down the street. Today there are well over a hundred styles, and nearly every one of them has a pizza it was made for. The bubbles in a crisp lager scrub away rich cheese, an IPA’s hops cut right through spicy pepperoni, and a roasty stout stands up to a charred, smoky crust.

Pizza

The word pizza first turns up in writing in 997 AD, in Gaeta, Italy, but the pie we know took shape in the streets of Naples, and Italian immigrants carried it everywhere. Now it comes blistered and soft in Naples, foldable in New York, square with crispy cheese edges in Detroit, and deep enough to need a fork in Chicago. Whatever your style, there is a beer waiting for it.

    Support your local pizzeria or brewery. Plenty of them run October 9 specials, so ask.

    Order in or bake your own, set out a few different beers, and let everyone build their pairing.

    Line up three or four styles, pale to dark, and find out which one your pizza likes best.

    Make pizza from scratch

    Dough, sauce, the hottest oven you have. Crack a cold one while the dough rises.
